Bye Bye Stagmont, Hello Jurong Camp

Edit 1 (7/6 12.47pm): Added platoon photo

I officially ended my Signal Operator training last Friday. Contrary to our expectations, we were not awarded the Lance Corporal rank upon the completion of this course. It will only come several months later in our unit.

Our platoon photo

Lets get started on that.

I will report tomorrow to 3 Signal Battalion (3 Sig Bn) under 3rd Division at Jurong Camp. To those naysayers who are worried that I may be leaking out sensitive SAF material, dun fret, Mindef has a page which described the breakdown of 3rd Division in even more detail. And 3 Sig Bn is where most vehicular signallers like me from Stagmont will go.

Its the worst possible posting not just because the majority goes there but also it is the toughest. Everything that I did in BMT will restart. SOC, strength training and all else physical will be draped back onto our shoulders on top of the burden of managing the vehicle. That is, according to my commanders and hearsay.

Its commonly known that those who do not do well in my course will end up in 3 Sig Bn. The better ones usually end up in more prestigious Signal battalions as listed here. BUT there are EXCEPTIONS. Its operationally unsound to send the bottom few on the results list to one unit, logic says that particular unit will collapse. So I happen to be one of the few above average ones posted there to help compensate for the standard, so says my commanders too. And some really lousy ones who entered the prestigious battalions mocked me for doing too well for my own good.

As usual, "suck thumb". I have to appreciate what I have. Signals is already one of the slackest vocations compared to others. Here I am, comparing what I have to those who have more. The good thing in being in such a unit is I will get lots of overseas exercises. See things which others will never get. And that, is a once in a lifetime opportunity not to be missed.

As some forum members said, life in Stagmont Camp for a signal trainee is the best moment in his NS life. So slack and carefree, it seemed like a PES C life in here. Hence its nick, Slackmore Camp. That stage is behind me now. I can only look forward to what awaits me now in my new unit.
