General 21: RIZR Z8 update

Guess this gotta be one of the last if not the last post before the As. Since some have complained to me that my blog has gone abit mushy, here are some serious stuff to "satisfy" you loyal readers.

Of course, not forgetting the "usual last section" of a post.

--------------------------------------------------

Although I said last Wednesday that the new RIZR Z8 my family got would not be for me, things have changed. My Mum for some guai lan reason decided to let me use till NS. So the newest gadget in my arsenal it shall be, for a short while.

This phone runs on the Symbian 9.2 UIQ 3.1 operating system. A clear departure from the clunky user-unfriendly OSes that plagued most of the older Motorola lineup. On paper this is good, however, the UIQ series software was primarily designed for Sony Ericisson touchscreen phones. Probably, Motorola wanted a touchscreen feature for the Z8 but dropped it later.

But this OS is damn slow, every single task required a wait of at least 1.5s with a "busy" sign showing. A new firmware update has to be in order.

In theory, the Z8 can recieve Firmware-Over-The-Air (FOTA). As demonstrated below.

In reality, things are not always that smooth. It presumes that the operator you subscribed to has support for this feature. Singtel, apparently does not. The official method of using the Motorola Software Update program was unsuccessful as the program crashed each time I tried. That leaves only the third-party underground method recommended by modmymoto.com.

As I have done below, I manually flashed my phone with the latest 2388 firmware build.

The previous time I flashed my V3x phone was in July. The Z8 shows the progress which is greatly appreciated. This picture signifies the once in a lifetime affair for my phone. Yep, the new firmware is very speedy, practically no problems. Many thanks to the folks at modmymoto.

This is a rare feature for a phone. The ability to change SIM cards on the fly without removing the battery even when the phone is on. They are both in separate compartments thats why.

--------------------------------------------------

The final US presidential debates was held in 16 October. I caught it live then so here are my short comments.

Full 1.5h video. I talked abit about the first, second and only VP debate in my earlier posts.

There was alot of clash on both sides. Very specific introductions into what policies they were up to. All these equated to a GOOD debate.

Obama as usual maintained his coolness throughout the debate. Despite his relative inexperience in the US political arena, he handled the issues well and appeared presidential. McCain on the other hand appeared very aggressive, interrupting Obama several times during his speeches.

So come November 4, Americans will get their chance to pick their president. As unfair as it may sound, the choice of 300 million people will affect the lives of 6 billion.

--------------------------------------------------

You can see the number of tags on the right. Largest number of tags sustained over a period of time. And likely to increase for awhile more. So, as I have said countless times, the guys in my class are more interested in killerzephyr than I am interested in her. Ying Yi, you should be very happy lol.

I know this will pass. Her friends too are tagging her blog much more often than before. I just hope this stage ends quickly.

I never thought it would be possible but yah, another day record of 116 on 16 October and a week record. No doubt due to this post.

Ok, so most of my classmates have been putting pressure on me to bring killerzephyr to the chalet or even the class outing after the last exam. Well, she has indicated clearly to me that she does not want to come on the basis that she may feel like an outsider. I respect that, so to the 0713 ppl, please dun talk about this or hassle me anymore.
